Banff

Banff and Lake Louise, Alberta

July 13 - 18

Banff is super famous and we found it, along with Lake Louise, to be another international tourist destination.  Germans, French, Chinese, Dutch, Indians, etc.  All main attractions were swarming with peeps. We had a lovely campsite with great views of the surrounding mountains and the gigantic sky. Our campground was around 15 km from Lake Louise and about 30 or so km to Banff. The site was a Canadian National Parks site and had no hookups so we were on solar and battery which never went below 80%! This was also the beginning of the Great Mosquito Attack on Sue. Denis gets bitten but doesn't react. By the end of this week Sue was a giant itchy welt.

The Chateau

The "uncrowded" side
The crowded side

Sue took the dogs and crossed the border back into B.C. to Marble Canyon, in the Kootenay National Park which she knew was so popular there would be other folks more enticing for potential bears, Grizzly or otherwise (Koala or Panda for ex). It was truly gorgeous and filled with one gushing water feature after another, flowing through canyons narrow and wide.

This one is a biggie - per Merlin
 my first Golden Eagle!

That afternoon we were treated to a pretty gorgeous site - a couple of elk casually chewing grass near the road.

Dinner that night was "Oktoberfest" - brats and homemade German potato salad and braised red cabbage. Wildflowers courtesy of our campground!

This is also the point on the trip where Sue took up sewing: I ordered an embroidery kit for beginners thinking it might be useful to pass the time. Passing the time is now more important partially because we are now in Brown + Grizzly territory and hiking alone is not advised. When I told my sister Anne, a long-time seamstress and quilter that I was starting to sew she seriously worried about my mental health. This is how strange it is for me to be doing this.

A handy tool - plus a mosquito electrocutor!
Always cool to have a firepit

And so it begins...

The next day we went into Banff again and had fantastic sushi and saw some more sights.

This rainbow, though!

This is hamachi belly - YUM
Just a cute lil' ski town (this is code for
expensive AF)

Stay tuned for our next journey, going across the border back into the U.S. :(
